Taiwanese Workers' Happiness Index on Labor Day: Over 9 Hours of Work Daily, Wealth Still Insufficient

According to the yes123 job-seeking website's workplace happiness index survey, this year's happiness index for Taiwanese workers barely passed with a score of 61, an improvement from last year. The average net wealth of Taiwanese workers stands at NT$359,000, slightly higher than last year's NT$339,000. However, many employees still suffer from the issue of 'overtime work.'

Although the ideal daily working hours are 7.4 hours, the actual average is as high as 9.7 hours, with about 50% of employees unable to claim overtime pay. As Labor Day approaches, many workers wish for better mental and physical health and salary increases.

The survey also reveals a prevalent overtime culture in Taiwanese workplaces, with over 80% of employees indicating they have taken work home after hours or on holidays. Furthermore, 56.9% of respondents reported that even when they work overtime, they do not receive reasonable overtime pay.

Financial stress is also a significant issue, with 31.2% of workers feeling that their debts exceed their assets. Many believe that a total wealth of at least NT$10 million is necessary for a sense of security.
