Taipei Stock Market Falls 254 Points as NT Dollar Strengthens; Related Stocks Shine

Today, the Taipei stock market opened high but fluctuated dramatically, dropping as much as 466 points during the session before buying orders propped it up after testing the 5-day moving average. It ultimately closed at 20,532 points, down 254 points, with a total transaction volume of NT$387 billion. The OTC index also fell to 219.39 points, down 4.5 points, or 2.01%.

In the electronics sector, TSMC (2330) closed at NT$938, down NT$12 or 1.26%; Hon Hai (2317) closed at NT$142.5, down NT$5 or 3.39%; and MediaTek (2454) ended slightly lower at NT$1295, down NT$5 or 0.38%.

The New Taiwan Dollar temporarily peaked at NT$29.95 in the afternoon session, rising NT$1.114 or 3.59%. Benefiting from the NT dollar's appreciation, stocks in the asset, construction, and domestic demand sectors performed strongly today, with many stocks such as Taifong (2102), YiHwa (1456), and Fushou (1219) hitting their daily limit-up prices, closing at NT$20.35, NT$14.85, and NT$16.55, respectively.

Formosa Plastics' four major companies also showed good performance, with Formosa Petrochemical (6505) closing at NT$38, up NT$2.15 or 6%; Formosa Chemicals (1326) at NT$26.2, up NT$1.2 or 4.8%; Formosa Plastics (1301) at NT$36.1, up NT$1.3 or 3.74%; and Nan Ya (1303) at NT$31.6, up NT$0.75 or 2.43%.

In addition, the NT dollar’s appreciation also stimulated the tourism industry, leading to strong performance in airline stocks. Taiwan Tigerair (6757) hit the upper limit, closing at NT$94.4, up NT$8.5; EVA Airways (2618) closed at NT$41.15, gaining NT$2.15 or 5.51%. China Airlines (2610) and Starlux Airlines (2646) also saw increases of over 3%. Tourism stocks, such as Canstar Travel (2719) and EasyFly (2734), also hit their daily limit-up prices, closing at NT$36.5 and NT$21.1, respectively.
