Microsoft Raises Xbox Prices by Up to $100, Gamers Feel the Financial Pinch

Due to uncertainties surrounding equal tariff measures from President Trump, an increasing number of gamers are facing rising prices for gaming products, which is putting a strain on their wallets. Microsoft announced this week an increase in the suggested retail prices for Xbox consoles and controllers globally, with the highest increase being $100 (approximately NT$3,083).

Reports indicate that the Xbox Series S is currently priced at $379.99 in the United States, an $80 increase from its launch price of $299.99 in 2020. The more powerful Xbox Series X is set to sell for $599.99, a $100 increase from the previous price of $499.99.

This wave of price increases for gaming products is occurring during a tumultuous period for the gaming industry, primarily due to Trump's implementation of new tariffs and retaliatory measures from affected countries, especially China. Economists warn that higher tariffs will lead to rising prices for consumer goods relying on global supply chains, including electronics.

As the trade war continues, Xbox players are not the only ones feeling the impact. Sony raised suggested retail prices for the PlayStation 5 in April in certain markets, including Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. Sony cited a "challenging economic environment, including high inflation and currency fluctuations" as the reason for the increases. Retailers, considering the potential impact of tariffs, delayed the pre-order dates for Nintendo's highly anticipated Switch 2, later confirming price adjustments for some accessories but maintaining the previously announced suggested retail price of $449.99 (approximately NT$13,872) for the console.
