Credit Card Usage Drops to 377.2 Billion in March, Yuanta Bank Becomes Issuer King

The performance of credit cards for the first quarter has been concluded, showing a single-digit year-on-year growth rate in transaction amounts, a significant drop from the double-digit growth seen in the past two years. In March, spending decreased by over 18 billion NT dollars, reflecting a decline of nearly 5% and indicating waning transaction momentum. China Trust narrowly reclaimed the title of 'Credit Card King' for the third consecutive month with NT$66.9 billion, while Yuanta Bank and Taipei Fubon ranked second and third in monthly issuances thanks to card exchange strategies.

Statistics from 32 issuing institutions for March indicate that transaction volume dropped to NT$377.2 billion, down NT$18.1 billion from February, a decline of 4.58%, but up by NT$36.6 billion compared to March 2024, marking a year-on-year growth rate of 10.76%, setting a new record for March.

In contrast, overall credit card performance in the first quarter surpassed NT$1.111 trillion, marking the highest figure for the period ever recorded. However, the year-on-year increase of only NT$63.5 billion compared to the NT$1.0476 trillion of the previous year’s first quarter reflects a mere 6.06% growth, far below the 12.32% and 19.17% from 2024 and 2023 respectively, signaling a slowdown this year.

In the card issuing market, China Trust's issuance of NT$66.9 billion (17.73% market share) allows them to maintain their 'Credit Card King' status. Cathay United followed with NT$65.9 billion (17.47% market share) and Taipei Fubon with NT$48 billion (12.73% market share). Yuanta Bank reported NT$45.5 billion for the month, becoming the only institution among the top five to see monthly growth.

Overall, the total circulation of cards reached 58.99 million, while the effective card rate declined to 66.53%, the lowest since December of the previous year.
