Impact of 145% Tariff on Taiwan and Potential Business Opportunities

Impact of 145% Tariff on Taiwan and Potential Business Opportunities

The tariffs imposed by U.S. President Trump put Taiwan's enterprises at risk of experiencing a second wave of supply chain relocations. During a seminar, the head of the Chung-Hua Institution for Economic Research, Lien Hsiang-Ming, pointed out that if China cannot export to the U.S., Taiwan’s traditional industries will be significantly affected. He recommended the government assist Taiwanese businesses in Southeast Asia to undergo on-site transformation.

Additionally, Zheng Hsiang-Tsung, vice chairman of the Taiwan Electric Vehicle Alliance, suggested that besides the U.S., there are great business opportunities in Central and South America, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East.

Former Foreign Minister David Lee advised that limited resources should be focused on the Philippines and India for future development potential as well. Experts believe that the tariff policy could promote industrial transformation and upgrading in Taiwan.
