President Lai: Zero Emission Transition Goals Unaffected by Tariffs, Commitment Remains

On the 24th, President Lai Ching-te chaired the fourth meeting of the National Climate Change Promotion Committee, emphasizing that the zero-emission transition goal for 2050 is unwavering for Taiwan. Despite the global economic challenges posed by the United States withdrawing from the Paris Agreement and introducing new tariff policies, Lai asserted that Taiwan's carbon reduction commitments will not be altered.
He highlighted the government's full support for industrial transformation to help businesses handle uncertainties, while also promoting new carbon reduction targets for 2030, 2032, and 2035, showcasing Taiwan's responsibility to the world. The government aims to be a solid backing for enterprises, providing funding and technical assistance to encourage digital transformation and carbon reduction initiatives.
Lai outlined four measures to strengthen carbon reduction strategies: First, the government must be a robust support for digital and zero-emission transitional efforts, providing project assistance; second, creating a circular economy by promoting high-value resource recycling; third, establishing recognition standards for supportive economic activities; and fourth, building an industry carbon emissions database to guide enterprises in carbon reduction.
The President stressed that the financial sector's influence is an essential engine for advancing industrial sustainability, urging the Financial Supervisory Commission to continuously monitor domestic and international trends in zero-emission transitions, thus enhancing the resilience of Taiwan's economy against climate change risks.
