Lai Ching-te Proposes 'Support for Stable Employment' in Response to U.S. Tariff War

In light of potential impacts on Taiwanese workers from new U.S. tariffs, President Lai Ching-te stated that the government will assist businesses in maintaining stable employment and encourage job seekers to participate in vocational training to mitigate the effects on middle-aged and older workers. He emphasized that tax revenue collected by the government is invested in strengthening national defense and labor protections, promoting national progress and prosperity.

With Labor Day approaching, Lai Ching-te met with the 114th National Model Workers and their families, recognizing the contributions of workers from various fields, including researchers, engineers, nurses, postal workers, and union leaders. He also expressed gratitude to awardees from Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Thailand for their significant contributions to Taiwan's industry.

Lai pointed out that Taiwan's economic growth rate reached 4.59% last year, ranking first among the Asian Tigers and surpassing major countries. He mentioned that the government will continue to enhance workers' rights, including the ninth consecutive increase in the minimum wage.

The government also recently passed a special regulation to invest NT$410 billion in supporting industrial development and stabilizing the job market in response to the U.S. tariffs. Lai emphasized the importance of the labor insurance system in ensuring workers' retirement and related protections.
