Labor Department Unveils New Measures! Salary Subsidies for Three Industries Affected by Trump's Tariffs

To address the export impacts and supply chain fluctuations resulting from the United States imposing tariffs on Taiwan, the Executive Yuan approved the "Support Plan for Taiwan's Export Supply Chain in Response to US Tariffs" on the 21st. The Labor Department will focus on enhancing worker skills and employment stability through six major initiatives.

The Labor Department states that to avoid drastic personnel fluctuations and increasing unemployment risks among workers, including difficulties for young people entering the job market, the "Key Points for Supporting Labor Stability Employment in Response to US Equal Tariff Policy" has been drafted. The six specific initiatives include:

  • Support for Affected Enterprises in Job Training: Assisting affected businesses in enhancing employee skills, with a maximum subsidy of 2 million NTD per case, and extending the application deadline to September 2025.
  • Recharging Workers with Reduced Shifts: Workers can participate in Labor Department-approved courses during agreed periods of reduced shifts, applying for training subsidies based on actual training hours.
  • Maintaining Employment Stability: Encouraging negotiations to reduce hours or adjust wages to prevent layoffs due to tariff pressures, with the government subsidizing the differences in wages for reduced work hours.
  • Integrated Employment Services: Public employment service agencies will actively assist middle-aged unemployed workers affected by impacted industries in connecting with job vacancies.
  • Encouraging Youth to Participate in Policy Training Courses: Supporting youth aged 15 to 29 to participate in training programs, with monthly study rewards provided.
  • Stabilizing Employment Measures for First-time Job Seekers: Providing career counseling and monthly job-seeking allowances for youth who are not in school or unemployed.

The timing for launching these initiatives will be rolled out in accordance with the evolving situation and labor market demands, and the Labor Department will utilize resources such as the Employment Stability Fund to ensure uninterrupted support.
