Electronics Sector Achieves Record 27.9 Hours of Overtime in April, Highest in 46 Years

In April, following President Trump's announcement of reciprocal tariffs and a 90-day grace period, Taiwan's electronics manufacturing sector saw a significant "pull demand" surge. According to the Directorate-General of Budget, Accounting, and Statistics (DGBAS), as of the 11th, the average monthly overtime per person was 8.9 hours, with overtime pay reaching NT$2,423, marking a new historical high.

In the manufacturing sector, the average overtime for electronics manufacturers in April hit 27.9 hours, an increase of 3.4 hours from the previous year, the highest level since June 1980. Cumulatively from January to April this year, the average overtime in the electronics sector reached 26.5 hours, also the highest since 1980.

Experts caution that whether this trend persists remains to be seen, especially in light of uncertainties surrounding U.S. tariffs which could affect future demand.
