Explosion on Wan Hai Container Ship in Indian Ocean Leaves 4 Crew Missing, Including 2 from Taiwan

Wan Hai Lines' container ship 'Wang Chun' experienced a major explosion while sailing off the west coast of India on June 9, Taipei time, resulting in 4 crew members going missing, including 2 Taiwanese nationals. Additionally, 5 crew members were injured. Following the incident, Wan Hai abandoned ship in accordance with international maritime regulations, leading to a large-scale emergency response and rescue efforts involving the Indian Navy and Coast Guard.
At the time of the incident, there were 22 crew members on board, with 4 missing and 18, including 5 injured, safely evacuated.
Senior analyst Zhang Zhenwei stated that while the abandonment of the ship complies with maritime regulations, the confirmation of 2 missing Taiwanese crew members is concerning. As an international shipping company, Wan Hai is expected to have international insurance, but the actual losses need to be clarified further.
Wan Hai confirmed the fire aboard the 'Wang Chun', but the cause of the fire is still under investigation. The company has activated its emergency response team and is currently working with relevant authorities and insurance companies to handle crew rescue, cargo security, and vessel salvage assessments. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also proactively contacted Indian authorities to initiate search and rescue operations.
Zhang noted that despite strong earnings in the first quarter for the major container shipping companies, this incident is likely to put pressure on Wan Hai's stock price. As the trade war between the US and China has cooled and the surge in shipping demand has subsided, Wan Hai's stock price fell by NT$1.5 to NT$100 on Monday, and the repercussions of the fire could further affect its market performance.
