MediaTek Gains Attention as 00878 and National Security Fund Interlink

According to recent reports, nine stocks from the "National ETF" Cathay Sustainable High Dividend (00878) overlap with the National Security Fund's list of protective stocks. These include Quanta (2382), MediaTek (2454), Fubon Financial (2881), Cathay Financial (2882), Yuanta Financial (2885), Mega Financial (2886), CTBC Financial (2891), First Financial (2892), and Uni-President (1216). Analyst Lian Qianwen expressed strong confidence in MediaTek's future, predicting this year to be "the year of MediaTek."

He also noted that TSMC (2330) is heavily reliant on Apple and NVIDIA for revenue, accounting for approximately 25% and 16% of its income, respectively. However, amid the impact of tariffs, Apple's estimated iPhone 17 shipment is expected to decline by 9% year-on-year, while NVIDIA faces order cancellations for products like GB200. In summary, TSMC faces numerous challenges this year, and its performance may be suppressed.

In contrast, MediaTek benefits from a diverse product lineup, making it less susceptible to tariff policies and geopolitical issues. Currently, it has secured a $5 billion AI ASIC order from Google and partnered with NVIDIA to develop automotive chips, additionally benefiting from a recovery in Chinese demand, as smartphone and new energy vehicle growth remains strong. According to estimates from Morgan Stanley, MediaTek's EPS could reach NT$81.16 this year, with a potential target of NT$115 next year.

Additionally, Lian mentioned that United Microelectronics Corp (2303) showed impressive results during its quarterly earnings report, with its 22nm process yield improving, leading to an expected growth rate of 36% to 40%. On the other hand, he analyzed that recent pressures from the decline of US bonds and the depreciation of the US dollar affect financial stocks like Cathay and Fubon, which hold significant US dollar assets, thus lowering their asset values. He advises investors to wait and observe before making moves.
