Taiwan Stocks Surge 552 Points as Power Sector Hits Limits

The Taiwan stock market closed up 552.61 points today, ending at 20787.64 points. Buoyed by the robust performance of the U.S. stock market, Taiwan's stocks opened the day with a jump of 299.05 points. The semiconductor giant TSMC drove the markets, assisted by strong gains in textiles, machinery, and financial stocks, pushing the index to a high of 20787.64 points. The weighted index ultimately climbed by 552.61 points, a 2.73% increase, with a transaction volume of NT$326.657 billion.

TSMC's ADR rose 3.62% in the last trading session, settling at $172.72. Today, TSMC (2330) opened with a gap up, surging 30 NT dollars to 938 NT dollars, culminating in a close at 950 NT dollars, with a total gain of 42 NT dollars, a 4.63% rise. Other key electronic stocks saw mixed results: Hon Hai (2317) closed at NT$147.5, up NT$6; MediaTek (2454) closed at NT$1300, down NT$50; Quanta (2382) closed at NT$251, gaining NT$12.5; Delta Electronics (2308) closed at NT$354, gaining NT$20.5; ASE Technology (3711) closed at NT$139, gaining NT$3.5; while Largan Precision (3008) closed at NT$2210, down NT$50.

In the financial sector, Fubon Financial (2881) closed at NT$85, up NT$0.7; Cathay Financial (2882) closed at NT$58.7, up NT$0.2; while CTBC Financial (2891) closed at NT$40.25, gaining NT$0.95. Sector gains were led by machinery equipment, which rose 4.18%, followed closely by electronic components with a 4.11% increase. Other sectors, including electronics, computer peripherals, semiconductors, construction, and green energy, all saw indices rise over 3%.

The only sector to decline was sports leisure, which fell by 1.09%. The Ministry of Economic Affairs announced yesterday that the share of renewable energy in electricity generation is expected to exceed 20% starting in November next year. Additionally, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang conveyed the surge in AI-related electronic demands directly to U.S. President Trump. These positive signals have launched the power sector into a rally, with four major power stocks, including Shihlin Electric (1503) and A-Power (1514) hitting their limits, while Chung Hsing Electric (1513) and Hwa-Chung Electric (1519) rose by over 6%.

Green energy stocks like Tianfang Energy (3073), Leshi Green Energy (1529), Fuwei Electric (6994), and Yunbao Energy (6869) also exhibited strong performances.

The top five gaining stocks today were Hsingneng High (6558), which rose by NT$5, a 10% increase; Raibao (8104), which climbed NT$3.4, a 10% rise; Nanfang (1440), which increased NT$1.2, a 10% rise; Tai-Hwa (9902), which rose NT$1.3, a 9.96% increase; and Taisugar (1722), gaining NT$5.1, a 9.96% increase. The five stocks with the largest declines were Juteng-DR (9136), down NT$0.5, a 6.67% drop; Xiangyao (2438), which fell NT$1.95, a 5.42% decrease; Wangwang Insurance (2816), down NT$1.35, a 4.69% decline; Qio (3356) fell NT$2.7, a 4.32% drop; while Zhonglei (5388) fell by NT$4.5, a 4.31% decrease.
