The Harsh Reality of the American Manufacturing Dream: Consumers Opt for Chinese Products

A recent experiment has revealed that despite President Trump's call to revive American manufacturing, consumers are unwilling to pay more for 'Made in America' products.

Ramon van Meer, the owner of the well-known showerhead brand 'Afina', designed an experiment to test whether American consumers would choose more expensive American-made products given the same quality. In the experiment, the price for the American-made showerhead was set at $239, while the Chinese-made version was priced at $129. Out of more than 25,000 consumers who viewed the product page, 584 ultimately made a purchase, and astonishingly, all chose the Chinese-made option.

Van Meer expressed shock at the outcome, noting that while 24 consumers had added the American-made product to their cart, none completed the purchase. This illustrates that even with a desire to support American made goods, consumers are choosing cheaper alternatives.

To truly revive American manufacturing, Van Meer suggests that concrete measures need to be taken, such as establishing a complete supply chain, promoting production automation, and encouraging consumers to support local products.
