Taiwan's Stock Market Climbs 161 Points to Reach 20,000; TSMC Ends at 897 TWD

The Taiwan stock market closed on Monday with a gain of 161.68 points, finishing at 20034.41 points, an increase of 0.81%. The Trump administration's softened stance on tariffs against China influenced the U.S. market to record four consecutive gains last week, and Taiwan's market rebounded by 477.7 points. Today (April 28), the market opened high and surged by over 100 points immediately.

At the peak of the early session, it rose over 200 points to 20073 points, then fluctuated around the 20,000 mark, hitting a low of 19983 points, presenting a mixed pattern of buyers and sellers. In the final moments, a significant amount of buying pushed the index higher, closing up by 161.68 points at 20034.41 points. This marks the first time since April 2, when Trump announced equivalent tariffs globally, that the Taiwan stock market has returned above 20,000 points.

Major stock TSMC had briefly reached 900 TWD last Friday but closed at 888 TWD. Today, it rose by 10 TWD to an early peak of 898 TWD; during the session, it fluctuated slightly, reducing its gain to just 5 TWD. Thankfully, it surged again near the close, ending up 9 TWD at 897 TWD, a rise of 1.01%, with its price back above the 5-day, 10-day, and monthly lines. The daily trading volume reached 21745 contracts, bringing the company's market cap to 23.26 trillion TWD.

Among the key weighted stocks, only MediaTek, Fubon Financial, and ASE Technology closed in the red, with MediaTek falling 30 TWD to 1350 TWD, a decline of 2.17%. ASE Technology edged down 0.36% to 137 TWD. Hon Hai Precision Industry rose 3.5 TWD to 142.5 TWD, up 2.52%. Delta Electronics rose by 10 TWD to 340.5 TWD, reflecting a 3.03% gain.

In terms of industry performance, traditional industry stocks, including electrical machinery, biotechnology, chemicals, and biomedicine, rose over 1%, while other groups saw small increases, with only plastics and oil fuel indices slightly declining. All electronic stocks saw gains, with electronic retail, service, and telecommunications groups rising over 2%, showing particularly strong performance. Computer peripherals and electronic components saw increases of over 1%, while semiconductors, optoelectronics, and communications all rose slightly. Financial stocks closed up by 0.44%. Today's total transaction value reached 215.5 billion TWD, with a transaction volume of only 3.89 million contracts and bid/ask volumes of 17.42 million and 6.73 million contracts.
