Can Trump Force Powell Out? Kuo Analyzes Three Possible Moves

President Trump criticized Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell as a loser, demanding immediate rate cuts or he would be fired, which led to a major downturn in global stock markets. However, this week Trump reversed his statement, claiming there were no plans to remove Powell and accusing the media of spreading false narratives.

Former legislator Kuo Cheng-liang stated on the online program 'Q&A with Friends' that ultimately, Trump would abandon the idea of replacing Powell. In fact, Trump has now revised his stance to express mere dissatisfaction with Powell without demanding his resignation.

Kuo pointed out that it's legally impossible for Trump to remove Powell, as the chairman has a firm term until May 2026, and Powell insists he will not step down. Although Trump could criticize Powell’s capabilities under the guise of legitimate reasons, this would require substantiated evidence of wrongdoing during his tenure, necessitating legal proceedings. Kuo believes Trump cannot win a lawsuit as Powell, despite some errors, remains largely qualified.

On the other hand, Trump could adopt a strategy of humiliation to press Powell. For instance, Trump has appointed a successor to replace Powell in May next year and could deliberately question Powell on the prospective candidate during each financial decision-making process, thus humiliating him.

Lastly, Kuo pointed out that a recent federal court case is reviewing a certain candidate's qualifications which, if that candidate is replaced, could provide an advantage to Trump. Kuo emphasizes that in the end, Trump will likely forsake the idea of replacing Powell, repeating that his current stance is simply one of discontent, not a call for resignation.
