Buffett's Holdings of U.S. Treasury Surpass the Federal Reserve

According to reports, the total amount of U.S. national debt reaches $36.65 trillion, of which short-term national debt is about $6.1 trillion. Meanwhile, Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway has a substantial holding of $300.8 billion, which surpasses the Federal Reserve (Fed) and has almost 5% share in total Treasury bonds.
As reported by Barchart.com, Berkshire's annual report shows that its short-term investments in U.S. Treasury bonds will reach $286.472 billion in 2024, marking a 121% year-over-year increase, exceeding the Fed's current holdings of $195 billion. Additionally, the company holds $14.4 billion in cash equivalents in U.S. Treasury bonds, bringing the total to $300.87 billion.
According to the U.S. Department of the Treasury's monthly public debt report, as of March 31, 2025, the total amount of Treasury bonds in the market is $6.15 trillion. Berkshire's share of Treasury bonds amounts to 4.89% of the total market, attracting significant attention. Amid the volatility in the economy and financial markets caused by Trump-era tariffs, it raises curiosity as to why Berkshire chose to step in. Buffett hinted at his investment strategy in a 2008 New York Times op-ed, mentioning, 'I am fearful when others are greedy, and greedy when others are fearful.'
