Jetstar Asia to Cease Operations on July 31, Lay Off 500 Employees

Qantas, the Australian airline, announced that it will close its low-cost carrier Jetstar Asia on July 31 due to an expected loss of AUD 35 million (approximately NT$ 69.6 million) for the fiscal year and cost increases from some suppliers reaching 200%. Additionally, 500 employees will be laid off, and passengers affected by canceled flights will be refunded.
CEO Vanessa Hudson stated that the closure of Jetstar Asia is part of a 'strategic restructuring'. She commented, 'It is a very difficult day for them. Despite their best efforts, we found that the costs from some suppliers have increased by as much as 200%, which has significantly altered the cost structure for Jetstar Asia.'
Jetstar Asia, headquartered in Singapore, operates flights to 16 destinations across Asia. Qantas stated that affected passengers will be compensated, and the closure will generate up to AUD 500 million in capital to support the group's fleet renewal plans.
Moreover, while the 500 employees of Jetstar Asia will be laid off, Qantas will assist them in finding new jobs, and the 13 A320 aircraft will gradually be relocated to Australia and New Zealand, creating over 100 employment opportunities.
