US Unemployment Numbers Reach Highest Since 2021 in May, Employment-Population Ratio Plummets

According to the June 6 report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), non-farm payrolls added 139,000 jobs in May 2025, exceeding market expectations. However, job gains for March and April were revised down to 120,000 and 147,000 respectively, totaling a revision of 95,000 jobs. The unemployment rate remains at 4.2%, the highest level since November 2021.

The broad unemployment rate (U6) held steady at 7.8%, the lowest since early 2023. In May, the number of unemployed persons reached 7.237 million, the highest since October 2021. Notably, those unemployed for less than five weeks surged by 264,000 to 2.451 million, marking the highest increase since February 2023.

Additionally, full-time workers decreased by 623,000, while part-time workers increased by only 33,000. Average weekly hours remained at 34.3 hours, meeting market expectations. The growth rate of average hourly earnings rose from 0.2% in April to 0.4%, marking the highest performance so far in 2023.

Overall, these figures highlight the challenges faced by the U.S. labor market, particularly regarding the decrease in full-time positions and the rise in unemployment numbers.
