A study by a U.S. non-profit organization revealed that 90% of 51 toothpaste products available in the U.S. contain lead, with 65% containing the toxic chemical arsenic, and others showing contamination from mercury and cadmium. Notably, popular brands like Colgate, Sensodyne, and Crest are among those found to be contaminated. The Taiwanese Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has also responded to this concerning finding.

According to the investigation by 'Lead Safe Mama,' it was found that over 90% of the toothpaste samples tested positive for lead, with 65% containing arsenic, nearly half containing mercury, and around 30% containing cadmium. The products tested included adult and children's toothpaste, as well as natural products, and some brands contained multiple toxic heavy metals.

Brands mentioned in the report included Crest, Sensodyne, Tom’s of Maine, Dr. Bronner’s, Davids, Dr. Jen, Colgate, and Dr. Brite, all of which were confirmed to have toxic metals. 'Lead Safe Mama' indicated that these metals could originate from certain additives in toothpaste, particularly calcium carbonate, bentonite clay, and hydroxyapatite, which is promoted for strengthening teeth.

However, some manufacturers have disputed these findings, claiming these trace elements are commonly found in the environment, and the reported levels do not pose a health risk. Despite the findings, all tested toothpaste met FDA safety standards, although public health advocates criticized these standards for providing insufficient protection against lead exposure, arguing that no level of lead exposure is safe.
