Salary Comparison: NVIDIA, TSMC, and MediaTek

Salary Comparison: NVIDIA, TSMC, and MediaTek

NVIDIA has the third-highest number of job openings in Taiwan among its global branches. The company offers starting salaries above NT$1.5 million for master's graduates and over NT$5.5 million for senior engineers. TSMC and MediaTek also offer competitive salaries; it is estimated that the average salary at TSMC is around NT$3 million, while engineers with 3 to 4 years of experience at MediaTek can earn over NT$2 million, including bonuses.

For TSMC, while the starting salary for new employees with a master's degree is relatively low at about NT$65,000 per month, the additional bonuses and profit-sharing make the overall compensation attractive. Earlier this year, TSMC announced that it would allocate NT$140.59 billion for employee bonuses for 2024, meaning that with around 70,000 employees, each could receive over NT$2 million, resulting in an average annual salary between NT$2 million and NT$3 million.

For MediaTek, the leading IC design company in Taiwan, there is potential for first-year salaries to exceed NT$2 million, with gradual increases to above NT$2.3 million as skills and experience grow, although still slightly lower than NVIDIA.

However, NVIDIA's salary in Taiwan still lags significantly behind its average salary in the U.S. According to the data submitted by NVIDIA to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the median annual income for its U.S. employees is US$301,000, equivalent to nearly NT$9.04 million, which is over 60% higher than the income for senior engineers in Taiwan.

NVIDIA did not elaborate further on this, but most technology firms in Taiwan indicate that salaries at their subsidiaries in different countries will depend on local salary levels and industry benchmarks. Given that the cost of living in Taiwan is lower than in the U.S., especially in Silicon Valley, this pay gap is considered normal.

While NVIDIA’s median salary in the U.S. may seem attractive, it is still outpaced by companies like Google and Meta in Silicon Valley. Google's median annual salary for employees recently reported to the SEC is nearly US$332,000, a 5% increase from the previous year, while Meta's median salary reached US$379,000 in 2023.
