Progress in US-Japan Third Round Tariff Negotiations 'Frank and In-Depth' Ahead of G7 Summit

Progress in US-Japan Third Round Tariff Negotiations 'Frank and In-Depth' Ahead of G7 Summit

Japan's Minister for Economic Revitalization, Ryu Akazawa, stated that the atmosphere in the third round of tariff negotiations with the United States was "more frank and in-depth". He expressed hope to effectively resolve the bilateral tariff disputes before the G7 summit scheduled for mid-June.

Akazawa emphasized the contributions of Japanese businesses to investment and employment in the US, and expressed a willingness to increase imports of American agricultural products while providing technical cooperation in shipbuilding and rare metals. Although Japan had previously insisted on the full cancellation of tariffs, this round of negotiations accepted "tax rate reductions" as a compromise option.

He also revealed that he might visit the US again at the end of May to participate in the fourth round of negotiations, stating, "We will do our best to achieve results". Interestingly, before this round of negotiations, Ishiba had a phone call with former President Trump, who later expressed support for the partnership between Japan Steel and American Steel, which is seen as a symbol of a friendlier stance from the Trump administration towards Japan.
