New Taiwan Dollar's Appreciation Slows, Stabilizes at 30 NT$; Premier Reiterates Taiwan is Not a Currency Manipulating Nation

Finance Center - Reported by Wang Jialin and Hu Chong'en in Taipei: After President Lai Ching-te and Central Bank Governor Yang Jin-long publicly addressed the issue yesterday, the rapid appreciation of the New Taiwan Dollar has gradually eased. This morning, the dollar briefly surged above 1 Jiao and hit a low of 29 NT$, but quickly retreated, currently stabilizing around 30 NT$. Many citizens are seizing this 'sweet price' to exchange currency at Taiwan Bank.

Premier Su Tseng-chang emphasized that Taiwan has never been a currency manipulating nation and will not tolerate predatory practices. While the appreciation has slowed, the market dynamics are beginning to return to normal. Exchange offices in Taipei were bustling, with staff answering phones and updating prices. This morning, the NT$ started at 30.125 against the US dollar, appreciating by 2 cents, later expanding to a rise of 1.5 Jiao, briefly hitting 29 NT$ before quickly retracting and fluctuating around 30 NT$.

Lin Chang-hsing, chairman of the Taiwan Financial Training Association, mentioned that if the central bank articulates its stance, insurance financial holding companies should manage their USD assets more judiciously to avoid rapid adjustments, which in turn would slow the NT$ appreciation. Despite the reduced appreciation, many residents are still lining up at Taiwan Bank seeking 'sweet prices' for currency exchange, as one million US dollars would have required 320,000 NT$ before last Friday but now only requires 300,000 NT$.

Premier Su reiterated that Taiwan does not endorse currency manipulation and urged monitoring agencies to strictly enforce regulations. Observing the rapid changes in the exchange rates indicates that the previous trend of violent appreciation is gradually returning to a rational state.
