Yu Maochun: Taiwan Should Focus on Self-Confidence and Defense, Not Rely on TSMC

The director of the Hudson Institute's China Center, Yu Maochun, recently stated that while TSMC is significant for Taiwan's international political stance, it is not the ultimate 'guardian mountain.' He emphasized that Taiwan must strengthen its self-confidence and defense capabilities, asserting that the US-Taiwan relationship can continue regardless of TSMC's status.

Yu highlighted that the US's bottom line is opposition to any party using force to alter the status quo, emphasizing that if China were to invade Taiwan, the US would certainly intervene. He dismissed the necessity of the 'doubts about the US' theory often seen in Taiwan, stressing that the US would not accept any unfavorable deals.

Additionally, he cited Israel as a solid ally of the US, noting that Israel's defense strategy involves becoming self-reliant even without American help. Taiwan should adopt a similar approach, continuously enhancing its capabilities for the advancement of US-Taiwan relations.
