The Taiwan dollar experienced a significant surge against the US dollar today, soaring over 1.5 cents to reach 29.59, marking the biggest single-day increase in nearly 40 years and pushing the Taiwan dollar to a two-year high. In response to the intense market fluctuations, the Central Bank convened an emergency press conference at 4:30 PM today, led by Governor Yang Jinlong.

Following last Friday's volatile trading of the Taiwan dollar, today's performance (5th) attracted significant market attention. It opened at 30.910, showing a rare spike of over 4.5%, rising 1.4 to hit 29.590, the highest point in nearly three years.

The Taiwan dollar's rise also impacted the stock market, causing significant declines in electronic component stocks, which fell over 460 points during the session. By the close, the market dropped 254.65 points, finishing at 20,532.99 points. Various financial holdings are heavily affected due to substantial US dollar assets; Fubon Financial's stock plummeted over 6%, while Cathay Financial suffered a 7% drop, pulling down many financial stocks.
