Taiwan Power Company Exam Sees Alarming Absentee Rate: Almost Half of Candidates Absent, Sparking Controversy

The Taiwan Power Company's (Taipower) recruitment exam for 2025 commenced today (4th), with approximately 12,000 registered applicants. However, only 6,882 candidates showed up, resulting in over 40% absenteeism, reflecting a declining interest in such positions.
Once regarded as a stable job, this year over 5,000 candidates did not attend, with many citing low salaries and job hazards as reasons for their absence. Some candidates mentioned that jobs such as food delivery or working in beverage shops would be less strenuous.
In response to the wave of retirements, Taipower stated it will continue recruiting new talent to ensure stable power supply, offering starting salaries of approximately NT$36,000 after completing a one-year training program.
The exam took place simultaneously across four locations: Taipei, Taichung, Kaohsiung, and Hualien, targeting a total of 1,084 personnel from 15 categories, with the 'Power Distribution Line Maintenance' category attracting the most applicants.
