Good News! Trump’s Tariffs Shake the World as Taiwan Launches First Round of Talks with the U.S.

Led by Vice Premier Cheng Li-chiun and Chief Negotiator Yang Jenny from the Office of Trade Negotiations, the Taiwanese government team held the first round of in-person negotiations on equivalent tariffs and other economic issues with the U.S. in Washington D.C. on May 1, Eastern Time.

During the discussions, both sides engaged in extensive discussions and exchanged opinions on tariffs, non-tariff trade barriers, and various economic cooperation topics between Taiwan and the U.S. The Office of Trade Negotiations stated that the atmosphere of the talks was candid and amicable, with both parties expressing a shared expectation for strengthening Taiwan-U.S. economic cooperation and hoping to create more opportunities for industrial and economic development based on mutual benefit.

Both sides agreed to continue discussions on various issues in the near future, actively seeking consensus and exploring deeper cooperation. Vice Premier Cheng emphasized that the Taiwan-U.S. economies are highly complementary and that close cooperation will enhance both industrial systems and global competitiveness. She believes that sustained discussions based on openness and mutual understanding will help form the greatest consensus.

The Taiwan government team supporting the talks in Washington D.C. includes representatives from the Office of Trade Negotiations, the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Health and Welfare, and the National Security Council.
