Taiwan Dollar Surges 1.2 NTD! Experts Recall 1980s Financial History

Today (2nd) morning, the New Taiwan Dollar surged over 1.2 NTD against the US Dollar, achieving a new high since January 2024. Economic expert Wang Bo-da pointed out that this dramatic rise is reminiscent of Taiwan's economic history in the 1980s, when both the stock and real estate markets experienced significant declines.
During morning trading, the NT dollar reached a peak of 30.815 against the US dollar, closing at 31.064 NTD. Historically, in 1986, 1 USD exchanged for 40 NTD, but by 1989 it appreciated to 26 NTD, followed by a dramatic downturn in the stock and real estate markets.
Wang noted in a social media post that similar to the Plaza Accord of 1985, economic policies at that time pushed up the exchange rate, which might influence future market conditions. In a report titled 'How Trump Tariffs May Trigger a Contraction Effect!', it is mentioned that economic friction between the US and major industrial nations gradually escalated, forcing the NT dollar to appreciate.
