Labor Unions Call on Congress to Support TPC's $10 Billion Budget, Considering Protests

The Executive Yuan has drafted a special budget of NT$410 billion, with NT$10 billion designated to cover the losses of Taiwan Power Company (TPC). However, opposition parties are resisting this measure, criticizing the government's energy policies. In response, the major labor unions from the oil, water, and electricity sectors issued a joint statement today urging all parties in the Legislative Yuan to unify their support for TPC's budget.

If the budget cannot pass, the labor unions are considering taking further action, which may include protests. They emphasized that electricity, oil, and water are essential to citizens' livelihoods, and TPC's compliance with government policies regarding price stability has resulted in significant losses.

TPC union chairman Wu You-bin noted that if the financial situation is not stable, it will affect power supply and employee performance bonuses and salary adjustments. Furthermore, he called for legislators to put aside political differences and support the budget. CPC union leader Chen Chia-lin stressed the importance of backing the allocation, as it impacts their dealings with foreign suppliers.
