US-Korea Tariff Negotiations Set to Begin! What Issues Might Be Discussed?

The tariff negotiations between the United States and South Korea are about to commence, with South Korean media outlining potential discussion topics. According to reports, after a 90-day delay on President Trump's 'reciprocal tariff' policy, the first negotiation with Japan has been successfully completed. Now, South Korea, also on the list of initial negotiating countries, is set to officially begin discussions, likely on the 24th or 25th local US time.

The South Korean government has stated that both parties will hold a '2+2 meeting' in Washington, D.C., proposed by the US side. The agenda and details are still under communication, and it is emphasized that this is a consultation rather than formal negotiations.

South Korea's delegation will likely include Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance Choi Sang-mok and Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Sung Yun-mo, while the US participants will be Treasury Secretary Mnuchin and Trade Representative Lighthizer.

Reports indicate that the two sides are expected to discuss exchange rates, finance, and trade. This meeting will break the tradition of Treasury meetings commonly focusing solely on exchange rates and finance issues. Trump recently stated that he intends to bundle the defense cost-sharing for US troops stationed in South Korea with tariff and trade discussions in a one-stop negotiation approach, whereas South Korea believes tariff and security issues should be addressed separately.

Sung Yun-mo, the South Korean Minister of Trade, Industry, and Energy, has indicated that there is no rush to reach an agreement and hopes that both sides can address the key issues in a mutually beneficial manner while continuing the progress of the agreement.
