U.S. Tech Giants Report Strong Earnings, Taiwan Stocks Surge by 552 Points to Close at 20,787!

On Friday, the Taiwan Stock Exchange closed up by 552.61 points, ending the day at 20,787.64 points, marking a strong weekly performance. The impressive earnings reports from U.S. tech giants Microsoft and Meta eased concerns over tariff impacts on corporate outlook and led to gains in U.S. stocks, with TSMC's ADR rising by 3.62%.
On this day (May 2), the Taiwan market opened strong, driven by major electronics stocks, surging by 552.61 points, equivalent to a 2.73% gain. TSMC saw a significant rise of NT$42, closing at NT$950, reflecting a nearly 4.63% increase. For the week, the weighted index gained a total of 914.91 points.
TSMC opened at NT$938, having increased NT$30 from NT$908. It peaked at NT$940 in the early session, before slightly declining to NT$932 during the intraday session. Ultimately, it closed at its highest price of NT$950. Its market capitalization reached NT$24.64 trillion. Among major stocks, only MediaTek and Chunghwa Telecom saw declines, while all others rose.
MediaTek was affected by competitor Qualcomm’s disappointing forecasts, with projections for a low single-digit growth in the smartphone market. MediaTek's stock fell to a low of NT$1,290 before closing at NT$1,300, down 3.7%. Other leading stocks, such as Quanta and Delta Electronics, rose more than half a point, reaching NT$251 and NT$354, respectively. Foxconn closed up 4.24% at NT$147.5.
In sector performance, telecom and industrial stocks saw gains exceeding 2%, while machinery, paper, and construction groups rose over 3%. Key electronic stocks such as semiconductors, computer peripherals, and electronic components all rose by over 3%, contributing significantly to the weighted index's upward movement. Financial stocks closed slightly up 0.36%. The total transaction value reached NT$326.66 billion, with 5.85 million shares traded.
