Trump's Tariffs May Spark Layoffs; Labor Department Plans Response

The fluctuating tariff policies of President Donald Trump are creating uncertainty across industries, potentially leading to job layoffs. In response, the Labor Department has announced measures to combat the impact of these tariffs. Labor Secretary John Hsu stated that the department will broaden the scope of job assistance for workers on unpaid leave, allowing companies to qualify for the program if they meet three specific criteria.
These criteria include being a registered exporter or importer with the Ministry of Economic Affairs, having recorded shipments to the U.S. in the past three years, and showing a significant decline compared to previous years. Additionally, concerns about reduced orders in certain industries potentially leading to job cuts have prompted the government to take action. Hsu emphasized that all feedback will be considered as they refine their approach.
