Yeh Jin-long Denies US Requests for Taiwan Dollar Appreciation

The U.S.-China tariff war has significant implications, and speculation arises that the next step could be a currency war. During questioning on the 29th, legislators asked if the U.S. wanted the Taiwan dollar to appreciate, to which Central Bank Governor Yeh Jin-long firmly stated three times, "That is not the case." He also mentioned that the U.S. is negotiating with Japan and is not seeking a rise in the yen.
This morning (30), the Taiwan dollar initially depreciated against the U.S. dollar but then rebounded, breaking through 32.2 NT dollars. The previous day, it had reached a new high not seen in nearly five months. There are concerns that an appreciating Taiwan dollar might be used as a bargaining chip in tariff negotiations; however, analysts believe this strategy would be detrimental to Taiwan.
