Taiwan's Stock Market in a Flat Swing, AI Server Stocks Under Pressure

Taipei / Report by Tsao Wei-sheng, Zhu Cheng-ju, Hong Xi-yu SNG

Today (30), Taiwan's stock market opened lower and swayed around the flat line, experiencing a significant drop at one point during the session contrary to market expectations. Despite the US major indices showing mixed results on the 29th and signs of a shift in Trump’s tariff policy, Taiwan's stocks did not benefit.

Analysts explain that disappointing results from AMD and its collapsing stock price have affected related concept stocks. However, overall, the worst period has been reflected, and caution is needed without causing panic.

The market opened with a drop of 17 points but quickly fluctuated. After foreign capital entered at 10 o'clock, there was a brief surge before dropping sharply again within half an hour. Although US stocks had a mixed performance on the 29th, with significant gains in some indices, the semiconductor index fell slightly by 0.92%. Analysts point out that the key lies with AMD, whose first-quarter earnings missed expectations, leading to a 16% post-market drop.

Similarly, the AI server group, including TSMC, has been affected, with TSMC experiencing low trading. Companies like Quanta, Wistron, and Wiwynn are also in a slump, as TSMC faces a critical point at 900 NT dollars. Analysts suggest that the negative impact of the tariff war has softened, advising investors to consider entry points for high dividend and yield stocks during any corrections on April 30.

Throughout the day, the market witnessed fluctuations, but sectors like finance, electricity, food, and green energy stood out with relatively strong performances, with some individual stocks even rising over 5%. Additionally, the head of the Financial Supervisory Commission, Peng Jin-lung, indicated that while Taiwan's stock market is relatively stable, outcomes of tariff negotiations and economic parameters need long-term observation, and ongoing dynamic adjustments will be made regarding short-selling regulations.
