Export Job Opportunities Decrease; Businesses Urge Tariffs to Be Cut Below 10%

According to statistics from 104 Job Bank, export-oriented job opportunities decreased in April, particularly in the electronic components and manufacturing sectors.

The escalating trade war has resulted in caution among export-oriented businesses in hiring. The statistics indicate a 3% month-over-month decrease in job opportunities in electronic components and manufacturing, while the computer and consumer electronics manufacturing sectors experienced a 1% decline.

Yesterday, industry representatives urged President Lai Ching-te to advocate for lowering the current 32% tariff to below 10% in negotiations with the U.S. President Lai expressed his concerns over the tariff impact during a meeting with local businesses in the Dakeng Industrial Park.

Vice President of the Chinese National Association of Industries, Wei Ya-an, stated that the pressure from tariffs is significant, and they hope to understand the government’s response measures. Local industry leaders indicated that they can absorb a basic tariff rate of 10%, but a raise to 32% would be unbearable, hence they seek a reduction in tariffs during negotiations.

HR expert Yang Tsung-pin analyzed that the decrease in export-oriented job opportunities in April is primarily due to uncertainties regarding the U.S. tariffs, leading businesses to adopt a wait-and-see approach in hiring. However, due to the ongoing labor shortage caused by a declining birthrate, companies are unlikely to implement work reductions.

Despite the reduction in export-oriented job opportunities, domestic sectors such as the restaurant and education services saw a 1% month-over-month increase in job openings, as they are less affected by tariff fluctuations. Latest data from the Directorate-General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics indicates that the impacted industries still offer substantial year-end bonuses.
