Taiwan's Construction Industry Faces New Challenge: Requirement to Sign Origin Declaration for Exports to the U.S.

Taiwan's Construction Industry Faces New Challenge: Requirement to Sign Origin Declaration for Exports to the U.S.

To prevent the circumvention of tariffs through origin fraud, the Ministry of Economic Affairs has mandated that, starting May 7, exporters of Taiwan-made (MIT) goods to the U.S. must sign an "Origin Declaration for U.S. Shipments." Those who falsify this declaration could face fines of up to 3 million NT dollars, causing significant concern among small and medium-sized exporters about rising administrative costs.

A local construction company has reported exporting around 60 containers to the U.S. monthly, and the new requirement adds operational burdens. The company expressed that this policy would inevitably affect their competitiveness in the U.S. market and that uncertainties remain regarding future U.S. tariff policies.

Additionally, the Ministry of Transportation has established a response team to assist businesses facing these upcoming challenges.
