Central Bank's Tools Abundant Against Yuan Appreciation; Chiu Yi Calls Lai Ching-te Taiwan's Biggest Traitor

The Central Bank denied being pressured by the United States to intervene in the New Taiwan Dollar's exchange rate, yet the currency continues to appreciate, closing at 30.145 NT dollars on the 5th, up by 9.19 cents or 2.96%, reaching a three-year high. President Lai Ching-te also stepped in to explain the reasons, however, Legislator Chiu Yi fiercely criticized Lai and the Central Bank for allegedly misleading the public, asserting that the surge in the NT Dollar was due to pressure from the US. He warned that export businesses were suffering, and the government's relief measures are merely a drop in the bucket, harshly labeling Lai as 'the biggest culprit destroying Taiwan's interests.'
Chiu pointed out that at the same time as the NT Dollar's rapid rise, Zheng Lijun was leading tariff negotiations in the United States. He questioned why, based on Lai's assertions of strong economic growth in Taiwan last year and the first quarter of this year, the NT Dollar did not appreciate until recently. Chiu emphasized that if the Central Bank intended to control the currency market, they had numerous tools at their disposal, which had previously worked well under former Governor Peng Huai-nan. He criticized the current governor Yang Jin-long for the currency's volatility, suggesting that an agreement known as the 'Mar-a-Lago Agreement' with the US might be related to this situation.
He highlighted the differing stances of various countries facing US pressure, noting Japan's painful experience with the 1985 Plaza Accord. In contrast, he criticized Lai for what he deemed a swift and excessive capitulation. Chiu stressed that the Central Bank has the ability and expertise to prevent the NT Dollar from further appreciating, but has allowed it to rise significantly. He concluded by stating that if this trend continues, Taiwan's export-driven economy could be in jeopardy, and Lai would be the primary person responsible.
